Thukra Ke Mera Pyaar

When I sat down to watch the Hindi web series Thukra Ke Mera Pyar, which started streaming on Disney+ Hotstar on November 22, 2024, I knew I was in for an emotional romantic drama. Directed by Shraddha Pasi Zairat and produced by Bombay Show Studios, the series revolves around the love story of Kuldeep (Dhawal Thakur) and Shanvika (Sanchita Basu). How much did this story, filled with caste, class differences, and societal pressures, impress me? Did this series win my heart, or did it disappoint? Let me tell you about my feelings, series highlights, and some of its shortcomings in this review!

What is the story?

Set against the backdrop of Uttar Pradesh, Thukra Ke Mera Pyar shows the love story between Kuldeep, a poor young man (Dhawal Thakur), and Shanvika, a girl from a rich and influential family (Sanchita Basu). The main theme of the story is the growth of their love amidst caste, class differences, and societal norms, and the intense opposition from Shanvika's family. This opposition turns away from love and turns towards revenge and betrayal. Written by Kamal Pandey, this story unfolds a dramatic journey between love, hatred, and intakam (revenge). Aniruddha Dave, Govind Pandey, and Kapil Kanpuria appear in supporting roles.

My Feelings: Emotions, Expected Twists

Shortly after the series started, the chemistry between Kuldeep and Shanvika captivated me. In the first episode, when I saw the scenes where Shanvika defies her family's pressures and falls in love with Kuldeep, I got a fresh romantic feel. Sanchita Basu lit up the screen with her feisty, rebellious performance as Shanvika. Her small expressions and the emotions she conveys with her eyes hooked me. Dhaval Thakur (Mrunal Thakur's brother) was impressive as Kuldeep in his debut role. Especially, when he turned towards revenge, his raw intensity and emotional scenes made me think, "Wow, this guy has done well!"

But, as the series progressed, the story followed the expected path. It felt like a mix of films like Dhadak and Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana, lacking in novelty. While the theme of caste and class differences was good, the writers faltered in exploring it in depth. I was a little disappointed by Shanvika's reduced screen time in the second half and some dragged scenes. In one scene, Shanvika's father (Kapil Kanpuria) slaps a minister, which was funny, but it felt unnecessary in the story. The revenge track is good, but the emotional depth is a bit lacking. It would have been better if the characters had been developed in slightly longer episodes, rather than 20-minute episodes.

Technical aspects, acting

The cinematography captured the Uttar Pradesh backdrop well. The rural atmosphere and the sets of a rich family home gave a realistic touch to the story. While the background score elevated the emotional scenes, the songs were not very memorable. The editing felt rushed at some places, especially in the second half, as there was an attempt to end the story quickly.

As for the acting, Sanchita Basu looked very energetic as Shanvika. Even though she comes from a TikTok background, her charm and expressive performance on screen impressed me. Dhaval Thakur carried the series with his raw emotions as Kuldeep. Given the intense scenes in his revenge arc, this guy seems to have a bright future. In the supporting cast, Govind Pandey, Aniruddha Dave, Sushil Pandey did well, but their roles were a bit sidelined.

Disappointments:

Predicted plot—Feels like Dhadak, Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana.

The story is not new—the caste and class theme is not explored in depth.

Shanvika's screen time is reduced in the second half.

Dragged scenes, hasty editing—emotional depth is missing.

Songs are not very impactful.

Who can watch it?

Thukra Ke Mera Pyaar is a decent watch for those interested in romantic dramas and social issues. Fans of Dhaval Thakur and Sanchita Basu may like this series, and they can watch it for their fresh chemistry. With a TV-MA rating, it will suit both the youth and adults due to its emotional intensity and some dramatic scenes. It may be a bit disappointing for those who want a new story. Disney+ Hotstar has a free streaming option, so even those without a subscription can try it.

Rating: 2.5/5
