Cooper Koch, star of the series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, visited Erik Menendez in prison, a meeting brokered by Kim Kardashian. Erik Menendez, who is serving a life sentence along with his brother Lyle for the 1989 murder of their parents, expressed appreciation for Koch's performance during their conversation. Koch described the meeting as "powerful and emotional," noting Erik and Lyle's normalcy and warmth.
The Menendez Brothers' Future May Change After Monsters
Koch's trip was arranged at the last minute, just days after the series Monsters debuted on Netflix. During the visit to Richard J. Donovan Prison, the two discussed topics such as prison reform and the impressive mural the Menendezes are creating at the prison complex. Erik Menendez specifically praised Koch for his work in episode five of the series, in which the character opens up about childhood abuse.
Despite Koch’s approval, Erik criticized the series’ portrayal of the case, calling it “naive and inaccurate.” The series received mixed reviews after its debut, with Erik Menendez questioning some of the narrative choices, including hints at incest. Ryan Murphy, the creator of the Monsters series, defended his work, saying that the multidimensional approach to the Menendezes’ story is important to spark discussion about their case.
Koch also commented on the potential for the Menendezes to be re-sentenced for their crime after Monsters, citing evidence of abuse by their father that has recently emerged. He expressed hope for a possible review of their sentences, noting the changing public perception of abuse experiences.
Additionally, Koch revealed that the Menendez brothers are considered model inmates, earning the respect of those who work at the prison. The prison warden also said that he feels comfortable leaving the Menendezes with their children, highlighting the personal progress the two have made while serving their sentences.
