The new film Hellboy: The Crooked Man finally has a US release date, but with one twist: it won’t be shown in theaters. According to IGN, the Hellboy reboot will debut directly in digital format on October 8, 2024, available for purchase for $19.99 on platforms like Amazon and Fandango. After a two-week window, the film will be available to rent for $6.99 starting October 22. This is different to the UK, where the film was released in cinemas on 27 September 2024.

The Hellboy franchise made its cinema debut in 2004 with the film directed by Guillermo del Toro

In this new adaptation of the popular comic book character, Jack Kesy plays Hellboy, succeeding Ron Perlman and David Harbour, who starred in the previous films. Kesy has revealed that this reboot will have a much more horror tone than the previous films, emphasizing a more faithful approach to Mike Mignola's source material. In fact, the creator of the comic book was directly involved in the production, collaborating on the screenplay and working closely with director Brian Taylor. Kesy has described the film as "R-rated, darker, scarier and more macabre" than previous film adaptations.

The plot of Hellboy: The Crooked Man is directly based on the comic book series written by Mignola and is being billed as one of the most faithful versions ever made. Kesy said that many of the scenes were adapted almost frame-for-frame from the comics, with only a few minor changes to fit the film format.

Alongside Kesy, the cast also includes Martin Bassindale, Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, Leah McNamara, and Hannah Margetson. Mignola, who has had a less active role in previous Hellboy adaptations, explained his decision to be more involved in this project from the early stages, with the goal of best preserving his vision of the character and his stories.
