Oscar-nominated actress Kirsten Dunst recently addressed rumors regarding a possible return to the role of Mary Jane Watson in a hypothetical Spider-Man 4 alongside Tobey Maguire. Speculation about the fourth installment in Sam Raimi's franchise emerged following Maguire's return to the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home.
For Kirsten Dunst, we don't "need" a new Spider-Man with the original cast
In an interview with IndieWire, Dunst shared her thoughts on the Spider-Man 4 rumors, revealing that she can't imagine how the project would work today. “I don't think we need it. I do not know. It was a long time ago,” the actress said. “I don't really know what it would be like, what the story would be. I do not know. It seems like… I don't know! It would really depend on the script, and also, I don't know, you're really putting yourself out there in a way that… maybe it's better to leave things as they were. Do you understand what I mean?"
These comments from Dunst come after Sam Raimi's statements on the rumors regarding Spider-Man 4, in which he confirmed that he is not currently involved in any projects related to Spider-Man. Despite this, Raimi praised the recent Spider-Man films and expressed appreciation for Maguire's return in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 was originally scheduled for 2011 and would have introduced new characters to the franchise, including Anne Hathaway's Felicia Hardy/Black Cat character. However, the project was canceled, disappointing both actors and fans.
Kirsten Dunst also previously confirmed that she would agree to reprise her role as Mary Jane in No Way Home if she was given the opportunity.
