Apple TV+ announces film about Afghan women's resistance produced by Jennifer Lawrence

Apple Original Films has announced that it has acquired the rights to Bread & Roses, the documentary presented at the last Cannes Film Festival which shows the powerful resistance of Afghan women against the Taliban. The film is produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi of Excellent Cadaver, along with executive producer, human rights activist, Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai of Extracurricular, and renowned director Sahra Mani (A Thousand Girls Like Me).

Bread & Roses will debut on Apple TV+ on June 21, 2024

“The closure of girls' schools in Afghanistan is not just a matter of feminist concern, rather it is a matter of international security. The Taliban are aware that children of educated mothers are difficult to indoctrinate and are less amenable to the idea of becoming their future soldiers,” said director and producer Sahra Mani. “Ensuring that girls' schools remain open in Afghanistan is critical to the safety and security of the entire world.”

Bread & Roses offer a powerful reflection on the impact on women's rights and livelihoods following the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in 2021. The film follows the lives of three women as, in real-time, they struggle to recover their autonomy. Mani captures the spirit and resilience of Afghan women through a raw depiction of their harrowing plight.

Bread & Roses, presented by the Eyan Foundation in association with Extracurricular, is produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi with Sahra Mani, along with executive producers Malala Yousafzai and Farhad Khosravi. Sahra Mani directs the film.
