The long-awaited fantasy-themed musical “Wonka” won the US Box Office in its debut weekend. According to data offered by BoxOfficePro, the film directed by Paul King earned 39 million dollars, with an average per theater that was close to 10 thousand dollars. Statistics in hand, the takings collected by Wonka is higher than that recorded by other musicals released in December in recent years:
- +25% compared to Into the Woods in 2014 = 31 million
- +65% compared to Mary Poppins Returns in 2018 = 23.5 million
- 2.45x compared to 2014's Annie = 15.8 million
- 4.42x compared to 2017's The Greatest Showman = 8.8 million
It will be interesting to evaluate the performance of the film with Timotée Chamalet given the classic Christmas period, which has always been considered the richest of the year. We will be happy to update you in the next few days.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes ranked second with a new gross of $5.8 million, for a total of $145.23 million. The partial score of the prequel to the saga inspired by Suzanne Collins' novels continues to be far from that recorded by the other chapters in the same period, nevertheless, the performance is clearly improving, and this is an interesting fact that underlines the good word of mouth of the public.
After winning the US Box Office last weekend, The Boy and the Airone grossed another 5.17 million dollars (-60%), for a total of 23.14 million. It must be said that Studio Ghibli's latest anime after just 5 days had already become the highest grossing of Hayao Miyazaki's entire filmography. The top five of the weekend was finally completed by Godzilla Minus One, in fourth place with 4.88 million dollars (total 34.25 million), and by Trolls 3 – Tutti Insieme, in fifth place with 4 million dollars (total 88 .66 million).
