Actor Jonathan Majors has been found guilty on charges of assault and harassment, after going on trial on domestic violence charges. It has been confirmed by Marvel Studios that, as a result, the actor has officially been fired from his role as Kang. In the wake of the news, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the long-awaited film that would have seen him return as the villain, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, will change its title. The project will now be called "Avengers 5" until a new official title is decided.

This news could confirm previous rumors that Marvel Studios had been trying to eliminate Kang's storyline from the MCU for some time, though even with a title change, there's still a chance the role could be given to a new actor. At the moment there is no information on the plot of the Marvel film. It was recently announced that Michael Waldron will write the screenplay for the film, which will be the first of two new Avengers films. Waldron – former creator of the Disney+ series Loki – had already been announced as the screenwriter of Secret Wars, but the plan is to leave him to write both new Avengers projects.
As for Majors, his lawyer said after the verdict that the actor "looks forward to fully clearing his name." This means an appeal against the ruling is on the way, although it remains to be seen whether anything will change. Regardless, he's likely to be stuck in the justice system for a while yet, so even if the appeal goes through, it's not a given that he'll return to working for Marvel. Avengers 5, formerly known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, was supposed to hit theaters on May 2, 2025, but has now been pushed back to May 1, 2026.
